Housing - Fall 2022 - Third Year
The approach to the Mar West development starts first with considering the existing neighborhood fabric, and the proposed light rail transit on the North-West side of the Mar Vista. Two small-scale blocks are proposed to act as a buffer to the existing residents and offer quick access to the transit for the new apartment residents. The residents will be both a mixture of co-living (roommates, inter-generational) and supportive housing (ADA, below market rates). Phase II of the development seeks to create a "neighborhood hangout" with an anchor grocery store, small shops, and a few restaurants or cafes. In Phase I, housing is the main objective. A series of public, semi-public, and semi-private courtyards/parks encourage residents to engage in a variety of ways, fostering chance encounters as well as providing places to meet up with friends. Further, the apartment layouts and facade are designed to encourage layers of engagement or privacy as each individual resident desires at different times of the day. Ultimately, the development will seek to nestle into Mar Vista, hopefully creating an even stronger identity and sense of community for generations to come.
